The Majesty and Faithfulness of God: Psalm 89
“1) I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth. 2) For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.” “3) I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant, 4) I will establish your seed forever And build up your throne to all generations.” Selah. 5) The heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. 6) For who in the skies is comparable to the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord, 7) A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him?” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭89‬:‭1‬-‭7‬
Psalm 89 contains 52 verses. It is one of the longer Psalms. It sets forth the surpassing glory and majesty of God. He is pictured as a holy and just covenant keeping God.
This Psalm makes it clear that the landmark Covenants of God with mankind are secured by His own unchangeable character and nature and not that of mankind. This is true of every Covenant made by God. He will keep them.
He is both promise maker and covenant keeper. He is the reason all things hold together and His will is ultimately fulfilled. He is the highest in heaven and on earth.
He is not threatened nor does He change. He is in control and His Word comes to pass. This Psalm is an amazing contrast between the surpassing greatness of God and the fickle nature of man.
This Psalm forces us to slow down and focus on the faithfulness of God. It replaces fear with faith and hysteria with calm. It nails the premise that heaven rules.
