When Gods Leading Sounds Crazy: Psalm 56
“1) Be gracious to me, O God, for man has trampled upon me; Fighting all day long he oppresses me. 2) My foes have trampled upon me all day long, For they are many who fight proudly against me. 3) When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. 4) In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?
8)You have taken account of my wanderings; Put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book? 9) Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call; This I know, that God is for me. 10) In God, whose word I praise, In the Lord, whose word I praise,” Psalms 56:1-4, 8-10
The backdrop to this Psalm is 1 Samuel 21:10-15. After David fled from Saul, he tried to escape by going to Achish, king of the Philistines. Immediately, his identity was discovered and many sought his life.
It was then that David disguised his sanity and acted like a mad man. He started scribbling on the gate and let his saliva run down his beard. His plan worked. The king threw him out of the city.
This Psalm expresses that David was afraid for his life. His only recourse was to trust in God. He had many who were ready to kill him, but his simple plan worked.
It is important to follow God’s leading. Sometimes His plans may seem strange, but He has ways of working that sometimes defies natural logic. This plan literally made David look crazy, but it worked.
The last part of this Psalm is after the fact of David’s escape. He is rejoicing in God for His deliverance. He is delighting in the goodness of God!
Never let a God moment go by without acknowledging and praising Him. This was one of David’s strengths. He kept a written record of the deeds of God in his life. As a result, we have the book of Psalms today!
