Create in Me a Clean Heart: Psalm 51
“1) Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. 2) Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. 3) For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. 4) Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.
10) Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalms‬ ‭51‬:‭1‬-‭4‬, ‭10‬
David wrote Psalm 51 after his adulterous sin with Bathsheba. His coverup led to the tragic death of her husband Uriah. In 2 Samuel 23:39, Uriah is listed as one of the mighty men of David.
To His credit, David’s repentance was sincere, deep and complete. It was life changing. His sin had totally broken His fellowship with God. His inner emptiness and guilt were unbearable. This Psalm records his repentance.
Much has been written about this Psalm, but recently when reading it, verse 10 gripped me. David prayed; “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” I decided to do a word study on the word “Create.”
To my amazement, it is the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 1:1 for the act of Creation. David wasn’t asking God to change his wicked and sinful heart, he was begging God to ”Create a new and clean heart” within him.
He did not want to tame his old and sinful heart, he wanted something new. He wanted God to do a miracle at the heart level. He had lost the inner war. He wanted God to create a clean heart within him.
According to Colossians 3:12, God wants every believer to put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. He wants to give us a new heart! We become a new creation in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Inner transformation is a miraculous work of God.
We all need a Psalm 51 confession and work in our life. That is exactly what the Holy Spirit sets out to do within every born-again believer. (See Titus 3:4-7)
Rather than trying to discipline or change your old heart, ask God to create a new heart in you by His amazing power and grace. No wonder David eventually became a man after Gods own heart.
