Panting for God: Psalm 42
“1) As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. 2) My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”” Psalms‬ ‭42‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭
David had numerous times of being driven away from the tabernacle where Gods presence dwelt. As Saul pursued his life, he was often in desolate places of exile.
In the Old Testament, the presence of God was associated with either the tabernacle our later the temple. In this Psalm, David’s soul was panting to be close to God, but he was driven far away.
Can you imagine the glory of the New Testament mystery of God’s presence within every believer. To think that the Holy Spirit indwells every born again believer and our body actually becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit. (See 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 6:10-20)
David understood the omnipresence of God in a general sense, but he had no comprehension of the glory of walking in the Spirit that is now available to every Spirit filled believer. We have the ultimate thirst quencher as we cultivate our walk in the Spirit. (See John 7:37-39)
