Mending Broken Relationships: Luke 12:58-59
“58) For while you are going with your opponent to appear before the magistrate, on your way there make an effort to settle with him, so that he may not drag you before the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59) I say to you, you will not get out of there until you have paid the very last cent.”” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭58‬-‭59‬ ‭
Matthew recorded these two verses as part of the Sermon on the Mount. (See Matthew 5:25-26) He related it to any opponent at law. The broader context of Matthew 5:21-24 deals with broken relationships of any kind.
He was establishing the principle that broken relationships with people grieves our relationship with God. Satan is a master at spreading anger, bitterness, discord and division.
He uses conflicts to destroy marriages, families, churches and business relationships. I’ve seen marriages end and churches divide over the dumbest things.
Anger and bitterness are blinding because they are fed by pride. They are like cancer to the soul. When not dealt with fast and resolved, they become demonic strongholds.
Healing broken relationships between believers is often a preliminary step to revival. According to Ephesians 4:29-32, bitterness, wrath, anger and clamor grieves the Holy Spirt.
Jesus modeled forgiveness and agape love. Reconciliation is the work of the Holy Spirit. Part of the work of the Holy Spirit is healing broken relationships.
According to these verses in Luke and Matthew, it’s impossible to be embroiled in a legal dispute without your soul being affected. How much better to settle the dispute, patch up the relationship and restore the grace and peace of God to your life.
If you have broken relationships and festering anger and bitterness toward others in your heart, stop playing religious games. You are out of fellowship with God. Stop going through religious motions with God and deal with your spiritual cancer.
Leave your gift at the altar and humble yourself. Go and reconcile your broken relationships. (Matthew 5:23-24) Don’t let the sun go down on your anger or you open a huge door for the devil. (Ephesians 4:26-27)
Forgiveness and reconciliation are the avenues to walk in the grace and peace of God and receive a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit. Why put your soul in prison when you can enjoy freedom and a clear conscience?
