The Importance of Wisdom and Understanding: Proverbs 3:21-24
“21) My son, let them not vanish from your sight; Keep sound wisdom and discretion, 22) So they will be life to your soul And adornment to your neck. 23) Then you will walk in your way securely And your foot will not stumble. 24) When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭21‬-‭24‬
If God used wisdom and understanding to lay the very foundations of the earth and create the universe, then we should seek them and cling to them. (See Proverbs 3:19-20) We should not let them vanish or depart from our sight. We should seek after godly wisdom and discretion.
Adam and Eve took from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Its fruit was not tempered with wisdom, understanding or discretion. Knowledge without wisdom and understanding can be dangerous.
It is wisdom and understanding that tempers knowledge with a reverence for the God of Creation. This brings us back to Proverbs 1:7; “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
When the understanding of the existence of God is included in your view of reality, your conclusions become radically different. You can walk in your way securely, your foot will not stumble and your sleep will be peaceful.
When God is removed from your system of knowledge then chaos, vanity and moral decay follow quickly. (Read Romans 1:18-32) This is the backdrop for understanding the book of Proverbs.
There is false knowledge. This happens when God is not factored in to your view of reality. It results in all kinds of lies and deception.
This is why Satan showed up in the Garden of Eden. He wanted a system of knowledge apart from the truth of God. He was working through his temptation to separate wisdom, understanding and discretion from knowledge.
So let me explode a popular myth; “Christianity is not in opposition to or at war with science.” This is a lie and deception perpetrated by atheists and secular humanists.
The opposite is actually true. If an Intelligent Designer laid the foundation of the world and created the universe by wisdom, then His ways can be discovered. This is the backbone of science.
He is the origin of the laws of physics, DNA, life, cosmology and even mathematics. Science screams that the universe is not based on random chance. Everywhere we look there is order, design and beauty. It points to God.
The battle is not with science; the battle is with philosophy. The atheist is biased against including God in their view of reality. The end result is knowledge without wisdom, understanding and discretion. The end result is confusion and chaos. The end result is biased secular humanism.
Can you honestly image a system of science that cannot figure out how many genders humanity has? What’s the problem. It’s not with the raw data. The problem is a refusal to include truth and the existence of God in their system of knowledge.
The problem is philosophical and not scientific. Secular humanism is not honest. It has no problem spinning the data contrary to the acknowledgement of God. It spins science to undergird a liberal agenda.
So, the book of Proverbs is very contemporary and relevant. Solomon knew exactly what he was talking about. I have met many renowned Christian scientists. They know where the data points.
An unreported tend is happening in the scientific community today. Many former atheist scientists are slipping over and taking new seats in the theist camp. It is thrilling to watch. At some point the data becomes undeniable. (Read: “Return of the God Hypothesis” by Stephen Meyer)
It is vital that you build your view of reality on the existence of God and cling to wisdom, understanding and discretion. This will put you on the path of truth. It will radically influence your outcomes in life.
