Gaining Good Repute
“3) Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4) So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man.” Proverbs 3:3-4 NASV
“4) So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:4 ESV)
We now discover the importance of kindness laced with truth. When you treat people with kindness gained from insight into truth, you gain favor with both God and people.
The New American Standard Bible talks about “good repute.” It is a dying word but conveys important meaning.
It has the notion of a reputation for wisdom, intelligence, good sense and wise discernment. When mixed with kindness and truth this quality sets a person apart from ordinary people.
The word was used for Abigail in 1 Samuel 25:3. Her actions saved David from poor judgement based on an emotion reaction of anger to Nabal. The whole story is worth reading. She eventually became one of David’s wives after her husband died.
The ESV talks about “good success” in the sight of God and men. It is the idea of gaining respect for your opinion and insights. It sets you apart from the ordinary. You will become distinguished for your wise yet gentle common sense. People will seek out your wise counsel.
The significant thing is that the book of Proverbs says this is a learned quality. It can be gained by studying and mastering the Proverbs.
What are you waiting for? It’s time to start digging into the book of Proverbs on a daily basis.
