Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit
““8) And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God; 9) but he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10) And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.” Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭8‬-‭10‬ ‭
“30) He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters. “31) Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32) Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.” Matthew 12:30-32 ‭‭ I often get the question; “What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? The above two texts together with Mark 3:27-30 are the three primary texts that record the teaching of Jesus on this subject. In each case, it is helpful to read the broader context.
Notice that they were all talking about the same conversation Jesus was talking to a group of scribes and Pharisees who were accusing Him of casting out demons by Beelzebub. They were activity running interference with the message of the gospel.
According to the context, blaspheme against the Holy Spirit has something to do with accepting the lies of Satan while rejecting the truth of the Holy Spirit.
According to 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:6; the Holy Spirit works to open people’s eyes to the gospel while the false god of this world works to keep people blind and lost. This is the general backdrop of the conversation Jesus was having with the Scribes and Pharisees.
This context together with the three mentioned above make a strong case. Blasphemy is rejecting the work of the Holy Spirit concerning the gospel of salvation while accepting the lies and darkness of Satan.
As Matthew 12:28-29 indicates, it is dying with Satan as master of your life rather than Jesus Christ. It is refusing the kingdom of light and embracing the kingdom of darkness.
Walking through deaths door while rejecting Jesus and the gospel is unpardonable. I have seen numerous people repent and confess Jesus Christ on their death bed. There is no second chance after death for those who die in a lost and rebellious state against the Holy Spirit. (See Hebrews 9:27-28)
The shocking thing about these three texts is that Jesus addressed them to the Scribes and Pharisees. He was warning them that it is possible to be religious but lost!
