The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts:
“4) Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5) And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6) There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7) But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-7
We now come to the subject of spiritual gifts These are supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit through born-again believers. The New Testament has three contexts that talks about the subject of Spiritual gifts.
The above text from 1 Corinthians 12 talks about the first category of spiritual gifts. These are often refered to as “manifestation gifts.” Altogether, Paul dedicated three chapters to this catagory. (1 Corinthians 12-14)
The second category of spiritual gifts is often called “motivational gifts.” These are found in Romans 12:6-21. These gifts become your inner wiring, bent or basic motivation for service and ministry.
They shape the way you see the world and other people. Grasping them helps you understand the inner drive both in yourself and other believers. Unfortunately, a few of these gifts can clash and become a basis for conflict in the body of Christ.
The third category of spiritual gifts is called “ministry gifts.” These are found in Ephesians 4:7-12. They are the leadership gifts or callings within the body of Christ. These people are anointed by the Holy Spirit to lead within the body of Christ and the local church. They are the missionaries, leaders, pastors and teachers
We will devote the next several sections to a deeper look at the subject of spiritual gifts. It is impossible to talk about the ministry of the Holy Spirit and ignore spiritual gifts. Yet many churches fall into that trap. We need to help believers discover, develop and use their spiritual gifts within the body of Christ.
