Rivers of Life:
“37) Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38) He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39) But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” John 7:37-39
Jesus promised that the indwelling Holy Spirit would become an inner flow of life. It would be unending. It would be constant. It would be steady. It could grow into “rivers” and not a “river” or small stream. The flow could become unimaginable.
This was the living water Jesus offered to the Samaritan woman in John 4:10 and the abundant life He promised in John 10:10. It is spiritual in origin and not physical. He was speaking of a quality of life known as “Spirit life” and not mere “biological life” or “physical life.”
This is a great mystery, but when the Holy Spirit comes into the new believer at the moment of salvation, “God Life” comes in. The New Testament often refers to this with the Greek word “Zoe”. The literal meaning is “Spirit Life.”
Every born-again Christian has Spirit Life abiding in them. It has the potential of becoming rivers of living water flowing from deep within the innermost spirit of man.
There is no limit to the inner supply available to those who learn to walk in the Spirit and not the flesh. Sin and unbelief can dam up the flow and block the supply of Spirit life.
The goal of every Christian is to come to freedom and remove every sinful hindrance blocking the flow of Spirit Life. The potential of Spirit life available to those who learn to walk in the Spirit is limitless. More about this in the next section.
