The Holy Spirit is the Inspiration of the Singer:
“18) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19) speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20) always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21) and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.” Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭18‬-‭21‬
This is such a beautiful text of Scripture. One of the outcomes of being continually filled with the Spirit is praise and worship. This often comes in the form of joyful singing. Study the above verses.
I believe the indwelling Holy Spirit expresses Himself through the believer with Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. It is not unusual to hear believers singing and making melody in their hearts to the Lord.
Some argue over the type of music. Some want Psalms put to music. Some like the old hymns. Some like contemporary worship songs. Some are constantly given new songs from the Spirit. Others are gifted musicians like David was with the harp.
There was a time that I was very inhibited in worship and thought those who raised their hands were a bit crazy. Then I read 1 Timothy 1:8 and was deeply convicted. Soon I realized the problem was within me. I started begging God to remove my inhibitions in worship. Soon I was set free to worship expressively.
My tastes for worship music are very broad and spans several decades and many continents. In some contexts, I raise my hands to the Lord and even dance in the Spirit. In some counties I may not know the words but I can enter into the spirit of worship.
I confess, I am now very expressive in the Spirit when it comes to worshipping Jesus. I try to be conscious of those around me, but the Holy Spirit inside of me loves to worship the Father and the Son. Inspirational worship has become one of my greatest delights in walking with Jesus.
Ask God to remove your inhibitions in worship. Ask Him to fill you with the Spirit of worship. Sing as unto the Lord and not the people around you. Learn the secret of Acts 16:25-26 and do likewise!
