The Inner Witness of the Holy Spirit:
“16) The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17) and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.” Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭16‬-‭17‬
One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to bear inner witness to our spirit that we are children of God. He testifies that we are born-again.
Romans 8:9 says; ““However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.” If the Holy Spirit is not present in your life, then you are not a Christian.
How does He manifest Himself? There is a hunger for God. There is hunger for the Word of God. There is an increased consciousness of sin and righteousness. There is a yearning to be in the presence of God. There is an inner communication with God. This is often called prayer and worship.
Soon you will begin to change as the Holy Spirit begins the inner process of regeneration. Your vocabulary will change. Your activities will change. Your humor will change. Your focus will change. Your circle of close friends will change. Your life purpose will change. Your spending habits will change.
You will begin to think about spiritual things rather than carnal things. You will develop a burden for others to come to know Jesus. You will begin to support kingdom work with your giving and volunteer service.
It can be summarized by saying you will develop a God consciousness. The more you seek Him, the more He will reveal Himself to you. The more you get to know Jesus, the more you will long to be like Him.
All of the above and more are inner witnesses of the Holy Spirit. We haven’t even touched on the fruit of the Spirit or spiritual gifts. How do you know that you are a Christian?
Paul simply concludes by saying; “Look for the evidence of the Holy Spirit working in your life!” What if you look and see no evidence? Then run to Jesus, confess your sinful and lost condition and invite Him into your life! Settle it once and for all! Ask Jesus to fill you with His Spirit.
