The Holy Spirit as the Inner Teacher: John 14:26
“26) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” John‬ ‭14‬:‭26‬ ‭
The teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit is a common promise in the New Testament. Jesus also mentioned it in John 16:13; “He will guide you into all truth.”
When a person is truly born-again, their eyes are open and the Bible starts making sense to them. The teacher has taken residence within them.
Paul prayed for this very thing for the young believers in the city of Ephesus. Listen to this amazing prayer request recorded in Ephesians 1:17; “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.” The resident Holy Spirit starts unpacking the mystery of Christ for genuine believers.
John briefly returned to this theme in 1 John 2:25-27; “25) This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. 26) These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27) As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.” 1 John‬ ‭2‬:‭25‬-‭27‬
According to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, this inner teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit does not bypass the need for diligent study of the Word of God. Scripture and not inner feelings or emotions are the foundation of truth.
According to Ephesians 4:11-12, God has given Spirit filled leaders to the church to ensure accurate teaching and equipping of believers for fruitful service. Accountability for accurate doctrine is a common theme in the New Testament.
Every Christian should make personal Bible study a daily discipline. There a few things in the Christian life more exciting and fulfilling than the Holy Spirit illuminating biblical truth as you read, study, memorize and meditate on the Word of God.
Scripture is the best commentary on itself. There is a reason Ephesians 6:17 calls the sword of the Spirit the Word of God. The Spirit of truth uses the word of truth as His primary textbook. Your doctrine must constantly be measured and tested by the written Word of God.
