The Promise of the Spirit and Agape Love: John 13:35 and Romans 5:5
In John 13:35, Jesus made an astonishing claim, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”” How could that be? They were recently arguing over which one of them was greatest. There was some sharp contention between them.
In the next three chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus promised that the Helper was coming. The Holy Spirit was going to change everything, because He was going to pour out Agape love on them.
I want to point to an amazing phrase in Romans 5:5. It sounds abrupt, but listen to this; “5) and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Did you see that?
The Holy Spirit is the source of Agape love! He literally pours it out within the heart of every Spirit filled believer.
This was the reason Jesus made such a bold claim in John 13:35. The coming Holy Spirit was going to pour out Agape love within every true believers. You cannot be Spirit filled without being filled with agape love.
If someone claims to be a Christian but Agape love is absent, something is tragically wrong. The Holy Spirit changes people from the inside out. Agape love is powerful! It is associated with the inner ministry of the Holy Spirit.
