The Immutable Goodness of God: Psalm 136
“1) Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 2) Give thanks to the God of gods, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 3) Give thanks to the Lord of Lords, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 4) To Him who alone does great wonders, For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 5) To Him who made the heavens with skill, For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 6) To Him who spread out the earth above the waters, For His lovingkindness is everlasting;” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭136‬:‭1‬-‭6‬ ‭
This Psalm highlights the Lovingkindness of God. It looks at twenty six deeds of God and acknowledges that every one of them was anchored in His goodness and lovingkindness toward Israel.
Twenty six times this Psalm says “His lovingkindness is everlasting.” There is no debating the goodness of God in His great wonders.
This is not the end of the list, but serves as a template for giving endless praise and glory to God. Every believer should have a growing list of the ever unfolding goodness of God in their life.
According to James 1:16–18, one of Satan’s basic deceptions is getting people to question the goodness of God. When bad things happen either as a consequence of our sinful decisions, Satan’s devious work in the world or the outworking of human depravity in society, Satan wants us to point our finger at God and blame Him.
Much like Psalm 136, James wants us to know that “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” (James‬ ‭1‬:‭17‬) That truth about God does not change! The immutability of God is rooted in the basic premise that God is good and only does good.
Biblical theology, your understanding of reality and your walk with God needs to be anchored in the biblical truth of the unchangeable goodness of God. The source of evil in the world and personal hurts and pains must be pinned on other causes.
Psalm 136 and James 1:16-18 are primary starting points to salvation, healing and freedom in life. Blaming God is Satan’s primary against people to keep them alienated from God!
