The Mystery of Melchizedek: Psalm 110
“1) The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” 2) The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.” 3) Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power; In holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew. 4) The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”” Psalms 110:1-4
This Psalm deals with both the Deity and externality of Jesus Christ. It presents His High Priestly ministry next to the Father. He will rule in the midst of His enemies.
The mystery of Melchizedek is based on Genesis 14:17-20. Abram met and interacted with Him in the Kings Valley when He returned from the battle with the kings. He blessed Abram and Abram tithed a tenth of the spoil to Him.
It is further impossible to understand this Psalm without a comparison with Hebrews chapters seven and eight. Here the writer of Hebrews unpacks the mystery of Melchizedek. By the time the text is complete, there is no question that Melchizedek was the pre-incarnate Christ.
Psalms 110 illustrates the depth of the revelation David had into the mystery of Christ, the coming gospel and the spiritual realm. It points to the coming king who would reign on the throne of David forever.
So what does this have to do with us? Well, because Jesus holds His office forever, He is able to give us eternal salvation! (See Hebrews 7:23-25) Jesus will never vacate His high priestly office due to His own mortality.
Our salvation is as secure as the identity of Christ! He is our eternal propitiation and heavenly representative. He ever lives to make intercession for us.
When properly understood, Psalm 110 cracks the door open to the mystery of Christ and the full scope of our salvation. It gives a glimpse into our heavenly blessings in Christ.
