God or Bust: Psalm 108
“1) My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul. 2) Awake, harp and lyre; I will awaken the dawn! 3) I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples, And I will sing praises to You among the nations. 4) For Your lovingkindness is great above the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the skies. 5) Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, And Your glory above all the earth. 6) That Your beloved may be delivered, Save with Your right hand, and answer me!
12) Oh give us help against the adversary, For deliverance by man is in vain. 13) Through God we will do valiantly, And it is He who shall tread down our adversaries.” Psalms 108:1-6, 12-13
This Psalm lays out the secret of victory against any enemy. The writer learned the secret David employed when facing Goliath. (See 1 Samual 17:45-48) Instead of fear of the adversary, David focused on God. He made it God’s battle.
So it is with Psalm 108. The writer so praises and focuses on God in verses 1-6, that he turns the whole battle over to God in verses 12-13. All through the Bible, those who focus on God prevail.
They may have had a smaller army, less and inferior equipment, but they had a much bigger God. Because God was actively fighting on their behalf, they knew they had an unfair advantage.
This principle goes all through the Old Testament. Every time the Jewish people walked with God and made Him their hope for victory; they won. Every time they tried to hire other armies or resort to politics, they lost and were humiliated.
There is a principle in this Psalm we need to apply. It can be called, “God or Bust.” When you seek God in your trails and sincerely glorify Him, then His reputation is at stake for the outcome.
I would argue that this is the same principle behind Philippians 4:4-9. Rejoice in the Lord always and seek Him in everything. The section closed by saying, “and the God of peace shall be with you!”
