Cry to God for Vengeance: Psalm 94
“1) O Lord, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth! 2) Rise up, O Judge of the earth, Render recompense to the proud. 3) How long shall the wicked, O Lord, How long shall the wicked exult? 4) They pour forth words, they speak arrogantly; All who do wickedness vaunt themselves. 5) They crush Your people, O Lord, And afflict Your heritage. 6) They slay the widow and the stranger And murder the orphans. 7) They have said, “The Lord does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob pay heed.”” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭94‬:‭1‬-‭7‬
This entire Psalm is 23 verses long. The writer was imploring God to stand up and take vengeance for His people.
As you read the whole story of Israel in the Old Testament, many times Gods people turned their backs on Him and went deep into sin and rebellion.
At times they became more corrupt than the surrounding nations. God often responded by turning them over to foreign armies to discipline them. This Psalm most likely followed one of those times.
The problem was, sometimes the invading army went overboard in their zeal. Instead of disciplining Israel, they tried to utterly destroy them. They had no mercy on child or infant, orphan or widow.
Such was the case with this Psalm. Gods people repented and began crying out to Him for deliverance. They were imploring God to rise up and act with wrath and vengeance. They were begging God to act on behalf of His People.
God is often pictured as the Defender of His people. Such is the case in this Psalm. They were crying out to God to rise up and defend His inheritance. They reminded Him that if He kept silent, they would cease to exist.
This Psalm sees God as both merciful and just. It leans into His lovingkindness and zeal for His people. When God steps up and takes action, things can change quickly. God has ways of dealing with His enemies in very decisive ways.
This was seen repeatedly throughout the Old Testament. When Gods people sincerely repented and sought Him, the tide turned quickly. Such was the case with Elijah and the prophets of Baal.
If God seems silent and you are being consumed by the enemy, take time to stop and seek God. Evaluate your priorities. Realign your heart and life with Him. Enter a time of personal revival. Take a deep dive into 1 John 1:5-2:2.
