Exposing the Illusion of a Life of Sin: Psalm 73
“1) Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart! 2) But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling, My steps had almost slipped. 3) For I was envious of the arrogant As I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 4) For there are no pains in their death, And their body is fat. 5) They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like mankind. Psalm 73:1-5
17)Until I came into the sanctuary of God; Then I perceived their end. 18) Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. 19) How they are destroyed in a moment! They are utterly swept away by sudden terrors!” Psalms‬ ‭73‬:‭17‬-‭19‬ ‭
It is sometimes easy to envy what looks like fun and pleasure for those in the world. From a distance their lives look happy and carefree.
But that quickly falls apart under closer examination. It is often a charade. Pain can be medicated by a thousand vises. Eventually the pressure valve goes off.
This Psalm pulls the mask off the hidden story and reveals the truth. At some point the life of sin comes crashing down. When the illusion is exposed by truth the end is often tragic. The heart can be very ugly.
This is when many people become open to the gospel. When the mask is removed and all self respect and dignity are gone, people often turn to God for mercy and grace. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost.
