Purpose to End Well: Psalm 71
“6) By You I have been sustained from my birth; You are He who took me from my mother’s womb; My praise is continually of You. 7) I have become a marvel to many, For You are my strong refuge. 8) My mouth is filled with Your praise And with Your glory all day long. 9) Do not cast me off in the time of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails.” Psalms 71:6-9
Psalms 71 is looked at as a testimony of David in his senior years. God had been his refuge and strength his entire life. He had become a marvel to many. God was his strong refuge.
His mouth was filled with glory and praise for God. He was confident that God would be with Him as he aged and his strength failed. Sure enough, God was with him to the very end!
The reason David was vigorous to the end was that he maintained a sense of purpose. He realized he had a mission to the very end. Let’s read on in the text.
“14) But as for me, I will hope continually, And will praise You yet more and more. 15) My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness And of Your salvation all day long; For I do not know the sum of them. 16) I will come with the mighty deeds of the Lord God; I will make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone. 17) O God, You have taught me from my youth, And I still declare Your wondrous deeds. 18) And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come.” Psalms 71:14-18
Did he accomplish his mission? Was he fruitful for the glory of God? He not only left the legacy of the book of psalms for many generations, he also became the linage of the Messiah. Jesus is going to reign on the throne of David forever.
No matter your age, purpose to persevere and end well for the glory of God! Praise Him to your last breath in this life! Double down on your mission and calling.
