Emotional Pain: Psalm 69
“1) Save me, O God, For the waters have threatened my life. 2) I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me. 3) I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.” Psalms‬ ‭69‬:‭1‬-‭3‬
At first glance, this Psalm sounds like David was in a depression. God seemed far and distant to him. But there are two verses in this Psalm that radically changes our perspective and understanding.
Verse 9 says, “For zeal for Your house has consumed me, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.” Does that sound familiar? When Jesus had cleansed the temple, John 2:17 says; “His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”
Could this Psalm be about the emotional suffering of Jesus as He was facing the cross? Do we have another clue in this chapter?
Psalm 69:21 is the clincher; “21) They also gave me gall for my food And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” That is exactly what happened to Jesus on the cross!
We now discover that Psalm 69 is a Messianic Psalm. It gives us a glimpse into the emotional pain of Jesus being distanced from the Father as He became sin for us and carried our guilt. (Read Psalm 69:26)
This Psalm is about far more than a bad day for David. It describes the suffering and anguish Jesus went through on our behalf.
