Peeling Away the Religious Stuff: Psalm 50
“1) The Mighty One, God, the Lord, has spoken, And summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.”
“5) Gather My godly ones to Me, Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.”
9) I shall take no young bull out of your house Nor male goats out of your folds. 10) For every beast of the forest is Mine, The cattle on a thousand hills. 11) I know every bird of the mountains, And everything that moves in the field is Mine. 12) If I were hungry I would not tell you, For the world is Mine, and all it contains.
14)Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving And pay your vows to the Most High;
23) He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God.”” Psalms‬ ‭50‬:‭1‬, ‭5‬, ‭9‬-‭12‬, ‭14‬, ‭23‬ ‭
Wow! What an amazing Psalm. I have selected several verses from Psalm 50 that captures the heart of God and what it takes to know Him. It involves peeling away the religious stuff.
He does not delight in sacrifice, religious ceremony or festivals. He is not impressed with the commotion of empty religion. He is not moved by sacrifices or offerings. He is not poor or hungry; He doesn’t need our stuff.
So what do you bring to God who already owns everything?
According to this Psalm, you bring the sacrifice of thanksgiving from a pure and sincere heart! He longs for genuine relationship with His people.
This reminds me of Micah 6:8; “He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?” ‭‭ Having fellowship with God is simple. It comes down to knowing Jesus, being loving and kind, having a heart of thanksgiving and gratitude, and being His hands and feet in the world.
