God has a Message for all People: Psalm 49
“1) Hear this, all peoples; Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, 2) Both low and high, Rich and poor together. 3) My mouth will speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart will be understanding. 4) I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle on the harp. 5) Why should I fear in days of adversity, When the iniquity of my foes surrounds me, 6) Even those who trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches? 7) No man can by any means redeem his brother Or give to God a ransom for him—”. Psalms 49:1-7
Psalm 49 stands out as a universal warning to all people that only God can save. Wealth cannot save. Religion cannot save. Human achievement cannot save. The might of an army cannot save. One man cannot save another.
Death is a great equalizer. It will consume everyone. Humanity has no solution for its own sin and depravity. Only God can save.
In this Psalm, David had a preview of the gospel. He clearly understood that only God has a plan to save people. This and other Psalms point to the coming work of Jesus Christ. It prepares the way for the gospel.
