The Glory of Mount Zion: Psalm 48
“1) Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, In the city of our God, His holy mountain. 2) Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, Is Mount Zion in the far north, The city of the great King. 3) God, in her palaces, Has made Himself known as a stronghold.” Psalms‬ ‭48‬:‭1‬-‭3‬
In this Psalm, David is expounding on the beauty and glory of Zion. The city of Jerusalem was quickly becoming the envy of the whole earth.
At this point, the tabernacle of the presence had been brought to Jerusalem. Preparations were being made to build the temple. David’s reign was established and many of his surrounding enemies had been defeated.
God was pouring out His favor on David and the Jewish people. The whole world had its eyes on Mount Zion. It was miraculously being transformed.
The wealth of the nations was pouring into the royal city. Materials were being accumulated for the building of the Temple. David was at the height of his reign.
Most important, because of David’s heart for God, he structured everything in Jerusalem after worshipping and glorifying God. He sincerely looked to God as his joy, refuge and strength.
As you read the Psalms, there is a turning point from struggles, opposition and persecution against David from King Saul, to victory, glory and triumph.
Saul had built his kingdom around himself. It collapsed. David was building his kingdom around God. It was beginning to thrive with unparalleled glory.
This Psalm is a testimony of that transition. The whole world was watching the transformation. God was being exalted, worshipped and lifted up in Zion. It was quickly becoming the hub of His glory.
A similar transition should happen in the life of every born-again believer. The focus should switch from self to God. It is true, the presence and glory of God rests on every consecrated believer. They begin to glow and walk in Gods favor. They become a living testimony of the goodness and glory of God.
