The Coming King: Psalm 45
“1) My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. 2) You are fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon Your lips; Therefore God has blessed You forever. 3) Gird Your sword on Your thigh, O Mighty One, In Your splendor and Your majesty! 4) And in Your majesty ride on victoriously, For the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; Let Your right hand teach You awesome things. 5) Your arrows are sharp; The peoples fall under You; Your arrows are in the heart of the King’s enemies. 6) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7) You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows.” Psalms‬ ‭45‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭
This is what is called a Messianic Psalm. It is a picture, description and prophecy of Jesus as the Messiah. It talks about His glory, authority and majesty. David had a vision of the present glorified Christ.
Portions of this Psalm are quoted in Hebrews 1:8-9. It points to the deity and Kingship of Jesus. It is an Old Testament preview of Revelation 19:11-16 when Jesus comes back as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
This Psalm was partially responsible for the rejection of Jesus as Messiah by the Jewish people during His first coming. They were expecting a mighty warrior and not a humble servant.
It was hard for the Jewish scholars to reconcile Psalm 45 with Isaiah 53. They were looking for a Warrior King to set them free from Roman rule and oppression, not a humble servant to be crucified by Rome.
Jesus came the first time as Savior. He is coming back as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Every prophecy about Him will be fulfilled. He is both Savior and Lord! You need to know Him as both.
