Setting the Stage for the Passover: Luke 22:1-6
“1) Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching. 2) The chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people. 3) And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve. 4) And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them. 5) They were glad and agreed to give him money. 6) So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowd.” Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭1‬-‭6‬ ‭
The death plot against Jesus quickly came together. The occasion was the approaching Passover meal when the lamb was to be put to death for the sins of the people. Jesus was about to fulfill the festival for Israel. He was the Lamb of God. (See John 1:29 & 36)
The Passover was instituted by Moses in Exodus 12 to protect those under the blood of the lamb from the destroying angel who passed over Egypt and killed the first born. The next day the Jewish people left the slavery of Egypt. God was at work redeeming His people from slavery.
The conspirators against Jesus were the chief priests and the scribes. They were seeking a stealthy way to put Jesus to death apart from inciting a riot from the people. They chose the cover of darkness.
The traitor was Judas. Satan had entered into him. Judas valued money above his master. He betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. The schemes of Satan always lead to misery, death and destruction.
So the plot to kill Jesus on the Passover quickly came together. Little did they know the prophesies, types and plans of God they were about to fulfill.
God was about to Redeem humanity from the curse of the fall. The components of the gospel were being fulfilled. (See 1 Corinthians 15:1-5) The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus was unfolding right on schedule! God was in control.
