Relentless Perseverance: Luke 18:1-8
“1) Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, 2) saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3) There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ 4) For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow bothers me, 5) I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’ ” 6) And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge *said; 7) now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8) I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”” Luke‬ ‭18‬:‭1‬-‭8‬ ‭
This is the classic parable on perseverance in prayer. The widow in the story was persistent until the judge granted her request.
God used the widow in the story as an example of the need for persistence in prayer. Praying in faith should include the same level of perseverance.
Intercessors understand this concept. We pray Spirit given unctions into reality. We need to learn from Abraham, and stay in faith and prayer even against all odds. (See Romans 5:18-22) In hope against hope we need to persevere in prayer.
This is especially true when we are in line with the Word of God. Faith includes obedience to the revealed will and ways of God. Many promises of Scripture need to be both claimed and prayed into reality in our lives.
Giving birth to a God breathed vision is like pregnancy and child birth. You move with it for months and endure the inconvenience right through labor and child birth. But that’s not the end of the story. Birth then starts the long process of parenting.
Walking in faith is not emotional or frivolous, it’s intensional. We see it in the Word, hear it whispered in our spirit, receive it, believe it, align our prayers with it and move toward it with perseverance.
These are the dynamics Jesus was illustrating in this story. He does not want us to be double minded. Every great work of God accomplished by godly men or women included this relentless perseverance.
Read Hebrews chapter 11. From Enoch to Noah, from Abraham to Moses; they all prayed and worked with perseverance. This is the missing ingredient in the modern church.
When we are assured of Gods ways and following His will, it calls for relentless perseverance. We rearrange our whole lives around God’s will.
According to the context, this includes the promise of His Second coming. It’s living with kingdom values and a kingdom mindset. It’s praying, living and moving relentlessly in a godward direction. Don’t loose your focus.
