The Days Will Come: Luke 17:22-25
“22) And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23) They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them. 24) For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25) But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.” Luke‬ ‭17‬:‭22‬-‭25‬ ‭
Jesus now begins to talk about His second coming. He was standing among them. His ministry was at its peak. Crowds were growing. Healings and miracles were a daily occurrence.
The warnings of His coming death, burial and resurrection at Jerusalem had not registered with them yet. The idea that He would be “rejected by this generation” didn’t make sense to them.
We are standing at a very different vantage point when we read this context than those to whom Jesus was speaking. Nearly 2,000 years of human history have come and gone.
In 2 Peter 3:3-9, we are warned that as we stand at the edge of His second coming, many mockers and doubters will come, but God’s promises and program will be right on time.
The next two chapters are very similar to Matthew 24-25. I read these chapters in Luke and Matthew realizing that we might be the generation that witnesses the second coming of Jesus Christ.
I long for His return. But as I wait, I live in Luke 17:20-21. I embrace the full benefits of the spiritual kingdom In this age of the Holy Spirit while I wait for trumpet to sound announcing the second return of Jesus Christ to set up His millennium kingdom.
Our goal should be to walk so close with Jesus through His Spirit, that His second coming will merely be faith becoming sight.
This will happen in one of two ways. For the believer, it happens instantly the moment of physical death when we are suddenly present with Him. For those who are physically alive at His second coming, we will be in His presence in the blink of an eye because of His return.
I fully recognize that I could be in either group! Prophesies of His second coming are unfolding so fast, the sky could flash like lightening from His return at any moment.
The goal is to live with such a Jesus and kingdom focus that we are constantly in His presence. I exhort you to take these words to heart!
