Worthless Salt: Luke 14:34-35
““34) Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? 35) It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”” Luke 14:34-35
This is a direct correlation to what Jesus taught in Matthew 5:13 during the Sermon on the Mount. In that context He said; “““You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” He then went on to say we are the light of the world and like a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden.
Salt can become bad and light can become dull and dim. When that happens, all value is lost. Neither are helpful.
This warning about bad or worthless salt should the tied back to the context of both Matthew and Luke. In both texts Jesus was giving a warning. Those who fail to count the cost of following Jesus and push forward with full resolve become useless for the Master.
Christianity does not work for the double minded, half hearted, worldly or carnal believer. They are worthless salt. They are dim lights. They are the part of the problem and not the solution. They might appear religious, but they are lost! In both contexts, Jesus used the illustration of worthless salt and dim lights as a warning.
I have heard numerous people complain; “Christianity doesn’t work for me!” The truth is that Jesus is not your Master. You are sinful, worldly, carnal and double minded. From the perspective of Jesus, you are not His disciple. You are worthless salt.
Notice that worthless salt was not even good for the manure pile. Salt was used to control the odor in manure piles. Bad salt adds to the stench. Carnal and worldly Christians stink!
If you match this description, Jesus is saying; “You aren’t fit for my kingdom!” The problem is in you and not with Jesus!
Jesus closed this text by saying; “He who has an ear to hear, let Him hear.” This phrase contains a very sobering warning. I do not take it with a grain of salt!
