Be Dressed in Readiness: Luke 12:35-40
““35) Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. 36) Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks. 37) Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them. 38) Whether he comes in the second watch, or even in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. “39) But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 40) i” Luke 12:35-40
What a surprise! After repeatedly talking and preparing His disciples for His coming death and resurrection at Jerusalem, He suddenly introduces the notion of His second coming. This is a new concept for them to grasp.
This was His first mention in the Gospel of Luke about His leaving and returning. The disciples were accustomed to Him being constantly with them. They had no reference point for this parable. This was a new piece to the puzzle.
This moves the narrative to our days. We are sitting on the threshold of the second coming of Jesus Christ. The main thrust to the message is to “be ready!”
Notice in verse 37, when He returns, He will set aside His garments and serve His faithful slaves who are eagerly waiting for Him. This is a reflection of His washing the feet of the disciples at the Passover. He will return with the same servanthood attitude He modeled when He left.
The pieces to His departure puzzle were still fuzzy in their thinking. This new piece of a return after a lengthy absence had no reference point in His teaching previously. This was an entirely new concept for them. It was about to become a central theme as He prepared for the cross.
Here is the important point, we don’t need to put the whole puzzle together about the end times and the return of Christ to be dressed in readiness. Just be faithful, be busy for the kingdom and be ready.
Verse 40 summarizes our expected posture well; “You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”
