Pereira family taking Wyatt to church for the first time. Oct 2024

Updated: November 4, 2024

From Wyatt’s mom, Katie Tofte de Pereira
~~Our baby boy is FOUR months old. 😭 Reflecting on his life doesn’t just make us think about how he’s grown, but everything he’s been through and overcome in his short life.
🖐🏻 He has his hands in his mouth every chance he gets
👁️ He scares us at times with his wide eyes
💪🏻 He’s holding his head up and gaining weight (somewhere around 10lbs)
🧺 Still in 0-3 month clothes
🍼 We’re still on an every three hour schedule
💤 Struggling here, especially at night
🫀Everything is going well heart wise
🫁 Monitoring the oxygen 24/7, his normal is 70-80%
I read this verse this morning and wished we would’ve found it right in the beginning when death was a common threat. Not too late to declare over his life.
“When he heard this, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.'” ‭‭John‬ ‭11‬:‭4‬
Our little warrior, thank you for fighting so well. We know your battle hasn’t finished yet, but we’re amazed at how strong you are. We love you so much. ~~

Wyatt is expected to have his second surgery in early January. Prayers for him are appreciated as this will be another major milestone. We continue to celebrate the positive milestones in Wyatt’s life and David and Katie’s parenthood, but the daily struggles are still there. Keep them lifted in prayer as Wyatt continues to grow!
Some challenges include: Not being able to return to either home (Iquitos or United States). Living costs in Lima are much higher than in Iquitos, including their monthly rent.
Some blessings: David & Katie are both able to be home to care for Wyatt. They’ve found a great church community that is opening doors for ministry partnerships. They’ve been able to have visits with close friends/family from the states and from Iquitos. Wyatt is out of the NICU and doing well.

Funds raised sits at $19,360. The family has been blown away by answered prayers and the support of everyone who has prayed, shared the story, and given donations. Currently, they are working things out with insurance, trying to get the paperwork in order so the hospital will perform the first surgery tomorrow, Tuesday, July 9th.

Wyatt is almost ready for surgery. They’ve found the needed team members and brought them in. Right now, the need is for donations of Wyatt’s blood type so they have enough on hand. Wyatt will have to have his heart stopped for four full minutes during the surgery. The surgery will start in the morning and last into the evening. They’re expecting if everything goes well that Wyatt will be in recovery for about a month. Please keep him in your prayers, and asking for a safe surgery tomorrow that accomplishes what needs accomplished and for his protection as he recovers. This little baby will need so much strength!! Thankfully, we have a God who makes us strong when we are weak. Keep Katie and David in your prayers as well as they walk faithfully in caring for their son.

Our friends in Peru have a prayer request to make.

Katie is a full time Nurse Missionary in Iquitos Peru, she was born and raised in Clear Lake, IA. Her and her Peruvian husband, David, live full time adjacent to the camp and serve faithfully in their community and in Genesis Church. They have been married just over a year.

Pregnant with their first child, the young newlyweds were heartbroken to find that at 34 weeks gestation, baby Wyatt was diagnosed with a rare heart condition, left ventricular hypoplasia. This means the left side of his heart is significantly smaller than the right.

Katie and David were sent to Lima last week to prepare with medical teams which led to Wyatt being born on the 1st of July via C-section and he is already a miracle. He was brought immediately to the NICU and is in need of extensive care, including heart surgery this week with a follow up surgery 15 days later.

Peruvian Medical Care coverage is very different from coverage here in the States and all costs need to be paid for up front with or without medical insurance and while they are working to figure out Wyatt’s insurance coverage it all has to be paid upfront before care is given regardless. His first surgery alone will cost a minimum of $25,000.

There is urgency in getting this miracle child the surgeries and NICU care he needs to survive. His name had been chosen before, and it’s meaning is so fitting: Brave in War. This baby is fighting for his life, and his mom and dad are waiting on the Lord.

Please give if you can and if you can’t please share the link to get the word out.

We stand on the promise in Psalm 103:2-3, which says, “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits- who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases
