I want to take a moment and say “Thank you” to everyone who has supported the GoServ Global Domestic Team over the last 8 weeks. Your support, whether through the hundreds of volunteers, financial gifts, and/ or prayers, is humbling and amazing.
I would like to take some time to share with you how your support is making a difference and how it is being used. To this point, we have helped just over 30 families providing them with between $5000 to $30,000 worth of work at no cost to them, allowing them to use the money we saved them in their rebuilding efforts. That is approximately $200,000 worth of work for families. Because of all the volunteer efforts and past donations, we were able to do that at a cost of just under $40,000.
What is the $200,000 in value? It is cleaning up properties using 3 Skidsteers, 1 excavator, 3 trucks and dump trailers, dump truck, and all the resources needed to keep all those moving. It is hauling debris away from properties, taking down houses that are beyond repair, and providing tree work.
How did we spend the $40,000?
Fuel is a large expenditure for us, running the equipment, hauling the debris and moving the equipment around to new sites. There is also a significant cost for repairing and maintaining equipment. Demolition and cleaning up properties require a lot of maintenance to keep trucks and equipment in good, working condition. The day to day spending such as food and lodging is kept to a minimum as the team stays in campers to cut down on lodging costs. Many meals are donated to us but there is usually one meal a day we need to provide for ourselves. Other costs that your financial support cover are vehicle registration and insurance, camper maintenance, and supplies that may be required in providing support to others.
The service we provide help families and communities get back on their feet more quickly. Even though we provide a financial savings, most families tell us that the support and hope we bring is significantly more important to them. Most people don’t know where to begin after a disaster such as the Iowa tornados but that’s were we can help them get started on the right track.
