The Sustainer: Hebrews 1:3c
“3) And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” Hebrews‬ ‭1:3‬
We now nave a very insightful phrase; “… and upholds all things to the word of His Power.” He is not only the Creator, He is also the Sustainer. Note He does this by “the word of His power.”
God said, “Let there be light, and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3) And we must observe there has been light ever since. That is, except that fateful day when Jesus was crucified. Matthew 27:45 reminds us that from the sixth to the ninth hour darkness fell upon the land. Why? Because the Sustainer was being crucified. At the moment of His death there were earthquakes, rocks split and the veil of the temple was torn. The Sustainer momentarily stepped out of His office.
Colossians 1:17 presents the same figure of speech about Jesus being the Sustainer. It says, “And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
The reason we can set our watches by the patterns in the solar system is because Jesus holds it together. The reason we can talk about “The Laws of Physics” is because Jesus holds everything together. They reason mankind has not destroyed planet earth is because Jesus is sovereign and in control and holds everything together. The only reason you and I are going to take our next breath is because Jesus allows it.
Knowing that Jesus is in the office of “Sustainer” gives me hope and peace of mind in these otherwise troubling times. As the old hymn says, “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” It is a song worth reviewing in these troubling times!
