The Love Of Money: Hebrews 13:5-6
“5) Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” 6) so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”” Hebrews 13:5-6
A good Christian work ethic, wise money management and responsible stewardship are commended in the Bible. Hedonism, materialism, selfishness and greed are condemned in the Bible.
Our character should to be free from the love of money. We need to learn contentment and dependency on God as our provider. We need to live with heaven and not the world as our home and heart focus. This boils down to our view of money.
The way a Christian handles money tells more about their faith than anything else in this life. Some use money to store up treasures in heaven and advance the Kingdom. They live to give and they give abundantly. Others focus more on Kingdom work than earning money. They live to go to the front lines with the gospel. These two go hand in hand. God uses both courageous givers and courageous goers.
The problem comes when money becomes an end in itself. Money can displace God. Money can be worshipped. Money can become an idol. Money can become the basis of our faith, trust and security. Money can become an obsession that takes control of our thoughts, energy and focus in life. Beware that you are not ensnared by the love of money!
