The Journey of Faith: Hebrews 11:6
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Hebrews‬ ‭11:6‬
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. So what is the starting point of faith? What is the basic foundation? This verse identifies two primary ingredients of faith.
First, a person must believe that God is. He or she must believe in the existence of God as defined by the Bible. According to Hebrews 11:3, this involves believing in the God of Creation. It is the belief that everything that exists is the result of a Creator. This is the primary building block of the Bible in Genesis 1:1; “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Second, a person must believe that this God rewards those who seek Him. He wants to have relationship with people and bless them. Therefore, He is knowable, approachable, personable and active in the world. He wants to be active in your life.
This basic faith launches people on a journey to get to know God. They begin to seek Him. The Bible becomes the guidebook for this journey. The next step of the Journey brings people to the foot of the cross and a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and the gospel.
At this point faith becomes active and not passive. It leads to a born again experience and a life of devotion to God. Like Enoch, these people begin to walk with God. They are filled with the Holy Spirit and interact with God daily.
I want to make a basic observation at this point; faith is not religion. Faith is a relationship with God. There is a huge difference between these two. Therefore, faith is a personal walk with God. The thrust of this verse is that God invites you to seek and find Him personally. Religion often becomes an end in itself.
Is God active in your life? Are you answering the invitation into a deeper walk with Him? Are you seeking Him? Get ready for a journey of faith.
