The Household of God. Hebrews 3:5-6
“5) Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; 6) but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.” Hebrews‬ ‭3:5-6‬
These two verses demand some brief comment. Moses was faithfulness in all his house as a servant. He was God’s mouth piece to the Jewish nation. Much of Judaism can be traced back to the ministry of Moses.
In the same way, Christ was faithful over His house as a Son. But notice that His house is much broader than the Jewish nation. He is over the household of God. He is head of the church. He is over all believers from every nation, tribe and tongue who became children of God through faith in Christ. The author is hinting at the mystery of the Body of Christ.
We now have a phrase that underlines the concept of the perseverance of the saints… “They hold their confidence and the boast of their hope firm until the end.” This does not mean they never have struggles, but over time true believers bear fruit that accompanies salvation. Their walk and their talk harmonize to prove their profession of faith. They begin to live and act like the people of God.
If you have no fruit in your life, you have every reason to question your salvation. If their is no evidence of the Holy Spirit working in your life, you have every reason to question your salvation. If a profession of faith in Christ has produced no change, you have every reason to question your salvation. If you embrace sin without guilt or conviction and are at home in the world, you have every reason to question your salvation. If you have no assurance of salvation it might point to deeper problem. True conversion results in the inner work of the Holy Spirit Who changes people over time.
Those who are born-again are transformed by the Spirit of God. The writer of the book of Hebrews would agree with the admonition of Paul in 2 Corinthians 13:5. It is important to “test yourself to see if you are in the faith. Examine yourself.” It is possible to be religious but lost. This theme is woven through the whole book of Hebrews.
