Coming Judgement: Hebrews 12:25-27
“25) See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. 26) And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.” 27) This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.” Hebrews‬ ‭12:25-27‬
These verses warn of God’s coming judgement. Exodus 19 reminds us how God’s voice shook the earth. Those who failed to heed the warning perished.
2 Peter 3:10-13 warns of the coming day of the Lord in which “10) … the heavens will pass away with a roar and all the elements will melt with intense heat and the earth and its works will be burned up.” The text then goes on and warns us live in holiness and godliness. Verse 12 goes on to say that the present heavens will be destroyed, and there will be a new heaven and a new earth.
The point is that if God kept His warnings in history, He will keep His warnings related to future as well. If His voice shook the mountain when God appeared to Israel, His coming presence will shake the whole universe. The whole physical realm will tremble and pass away with a roar before the presence God.
The whole warning of 2 Peter 3 is to mockers and doubters. It is addressed to those who deny God and His promise of coming judgement. The writer of the book of Hebrews is saying the same thing in the text before us. God always keeps His Word.
Don’t put your security in the wrong place. Put your faith in God. Live for the kingdom that cannot be shaken. Store up treasures in heaven and not merely on earth. Live with eternity in mind.
