Book of Hebrews
God Has Spoken Throughout History: Hebrews 1:1
“1) God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,” Hebrews‬ ‭1:1
The book of Hebrews opens with a lprofound truth; God has spoken to humanity throughout history. He primarily used the Jewish nation as His source of revelation in Old Testament times. Notice, “He spoke to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways.” The other nations gave themselves over to false gods and false religions. Even when Israel strayed, God sent His prophets to call them to repentance and warn them of judgement. He continued to speak to Israel.
Have you ever paused to consider some of the historical ways God has spoken to mankind? Let’s take a moment and look at some of the ways God spoke in the Old Testament.
He speaks through the created realm. Romans 1:19-20 He he speaks through the heavens. Psalms 19:1-6 He spoke to Adam and Eve directly. Genesis 2-3 He spoke through angelic messengers. Genesis 18 & Exodus 3 He spoke directly to select leaders like Moses. Exodus 6:1-9 He spoke through numerous signs and wonders like the plagues on Egypt. Exodus 7:3 He Spoke through the giving of the Law. Exodus 19-20 He spoke through numerous prophets, priests and kings. This became the compilation of the Old Testament. 1 Peter 1:10-12 God speaks through His Word. Hebrews 4:12
So what conclusion can we draw from these points? God wants to make Himself known to humanity! He has been actively speaking throughout human history. He has left manifold witnesses of Himself.
It behooves you and me to study the Word of God and get to know the God of the Bible. If you seek Him you will find Him!
