Pride or Humility: Proverbs 11:2
“When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2
Pride is one of the seven basic strongholds Satan uses to destroy people. It is mentioned in both James 4:6-7 and 1 Peter 5:5-9. In both contexts, the devil is lurking in the background seeking someone to devour.
Notice also that God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. It reminds me of the story of proud King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter four. When he became proud and boastful, he lost everything including his mind. Daniel 4:28-37 are worthy of careful study.
Let me quite verse 37; “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt and honor the King of heaven, for all His works are true and His ways just, and He is able to humble those who walk in pride.”” (Daniel 4:37)
As we return to Proverbs 11:4; with pride comes more than dishonor, it is accompanied by the crash of self reliance and vein glory. It worships the god in the mirror. It thinks it knows everything. At some point God steps back and begins to resist the proud.
But with the humble is wisdom. It not only acknowledges God, it actively seeks Him and His ways. Humility acknowledges that heaven rules. (Daniel 4:26; 34-35) The result is that God gives grace, favor and help to the humble.
When Nebuchadnezzar humbled himself his mental illness was reversed. God healed Him and returned His reign and majesty.
