Honest Business People: Proverbs 11:1
“1) A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, But a just weight is His delight.” Proverbs 11:1
It’s a trick as old as human civilization. Dishonest sellers would cheat their customers. An unjust weight meant cheating the balance. The scale said 1 pound, but the buyer was only getting 15 ounces. The balancing weight had been shaved.
Scrupulous business men and women would shave weights and balances. The customers were paying more but getting less.
Some would mix in a poor quality product with a good quality. It was costing the seller less while the buyer was paying a premium thinking he was buying the best quality.
It can also happen with volume. Today there are inspections at gas stations to make sure the pumps are calibrated properly. Why? Because people still cheat customers.
The word “abomination” is not used very often in the Bible, but is applied to business cheaters and those who rip off consumers. By contrast, God delights in honest and gracious business people.
The rise of Christianity started a phenomenon called “the bakers dozen.” Godly Christian business people would do just the opposite. They were filled with Grace and generosity. They would add more. Instead of twelve for a dozen, they would throw in one more.
That is a reflection of the character of God. He gives above and beyond. He is loving and generous. These kind of buisness people are His delight.
