Make Your Tongue Your Greatest Wealth: Proverbs 10:20-21
“20) The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver, The heart of the wicked is worth little. 21) The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding.” Proverbs 10:20-21
Again, Solomon focuses on the words of the righteous. They are worth more than silver. They build up instead of tear down. They encourage instead of discourage. They impart faith, motivation, courage, truth and wisdom.
Righteous, positive and encourage words are the mark of a true leader. They can rally the troops, impart a good and godly vision and lead others toward revival, awakening and noble things. The speech of the righteous imparts value and brings out the best in those around them.
The heart and motives of the wicked do just the opposite. They are sold to do evil, tear apart and undermine truth and godliness. James 3:5-6 talks about the tongue that is set on fire by hell. The mouth is the outlet of what fills the heart. James 3:13-18 paints in the bigger picture.
Solomon was right, the heart of the wicked is worth little. Fools die for lack of understanding. The condition of the heart and the power of the tongue feed and influence many. They contribute to the destiny of entire nations.
Solomon could look back on the legacy of many men. From Moses, Joshua, the Judges of Israel, Samuel the Prophet, wicked King Saul and then his own father, King David. These verses about the tongue were not idle observations. They were undeniable facts of history.
So what about your heart and your tongue? It will shape and influence your own destiny and that of those around you! Are you going to be a builder or a destroyer. Are you going to heal or wound? Are you going to be a spring of love, forgiveness and healing or a sewer of bitterness and death?
