To Speak or Not to Speak: Proverbs 10:19
“19) When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who restrains his lips is wise.” Proverbs 10:19
To speak or not to speak; that is the question. It is prudent to weigh your words before you engage your mouth. When there are many thoughtless words, transgression is unavoidable.
Here are a few basic guidelines when not to speak:
Don’t speak when you are angry or emotional. Don’t speak when you are uniformed. Don’t speak without first carefully listening. Don’t speak when you do not know the full truth or story. Don’t speak when you do not want to be quoted. Don’t speak in such a way as to hurt or embarrass others. Don’t speak to represent the views or opinions of others without their consent. Don’t speak or “think out loud” when others assume you are sharing your conclusions. Don’t speak persuasively about matters for which you do not understand the language, culture, history or context. Don’t speak in a movie theater, when watching a professional chess match, during a golf swing or when being questioned by legal authorities. Learn when silence is your best friend.
Good communication skills are more valuable than gold. Take time and learn positive communication skills. Learn when to speak and when not to speak.
