The Promise of Life:
“16) The wages of the righteous is life, The income of the wicked, punishment. 17) He is on the path of life who heeds instruction, But he who ignores reproof goes astray.” Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭
Solomon often connected wisdom and righteousness with life. He was talking about a quality of life that far surpassed mere biological living.
This life can be associated with the blessings that come on the person who delights in God. (Psalm 1:1-6) It also applied to the person who walked in the ways of God. (Isaiah 55:6-13) The Old Testament is packed with benefits and blessings associated with walking with God.
The New Testament goes much deeper. Personal saving faith in Jesus Christ opens the door to what is called “spirit life.” This is directly connected to being “born-again” and filled with the Holy Spirit. The abundant life Jesus promised His followers includes but far surpasses Old Testament “life” dynamics. (John 10:10)
The Old Testament prophets looked forward with wonder and mystery as they prophesied of the glories we have in Christ. (See 1 Peter 1:10-12) The walk in the Spirit was a mystery to them. It can be a daily experience for every believer.
The bottom line is that righteousness is always associated with life and sinfulness is associated with judgement, misery and death. (Romans 8:6-11) A person reaps what they sow in life. (See Galatians 6:7-8)
