Wealth and Poverty: Proverbs 10:15
“15) The rich man’s wealth is his fortress, The ruin of the poor is their poverty.” Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭15‬
When taken alone, this verse can be misunderstood. But there are two other verses in this chapter alone that adds perspective on the subject of wealth. Let’s look at them.
“Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.” Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭4‬
“It is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich, And He adds no sorrow to it.” Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭22‬
Now the fuller meaning comes into focus. Wealth obtained in a godly way is a great blessing. It is like a fortress against all kinds of potential disasters in life. A good emergency fund can give peace of mind and help ward off all kinds of hungry financial locusts.
Those who work hard to earn wealth know the value of money. They invest in good and worthwhile causes.
Wealth can be leveraged for much good. Kingdom projects, missions and world evangelism take financial resources. God blesses some people as His stewards to help underwrite ministry and guard against waste.
Solomon also deals with poverty in this verse. It is a harsh and painful phenomenon. Poverty has a mindset all of its own that is self perpetuating.
The greatest hope for change is discovering and living out the financial principles recorded in the book of Proverbs. When consistently applied over time, they can help anyone turn the corner on poverty.
It must also be noted that both wealth and poverty are a matter of perspective. Some who consider themselves poor in the western world would be counted as wealthy in many places around the world.
