Sex for Hire: Proverbs 9:13-18
“13) The woman of folly is boisterous, She is naive and knows nothing. 14) She sits at the doorway of her house, On a seat by the high places of the city, 15) Calling to those who pass by, Who are making their paths straight: “16) Whoever is naive, let him turn in here,” And to him who lacks understanding she says, “17) Stolen water is sweet; And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” 18) But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of Sheol.” Proverbs 9:13-18
Solomon again returns to the trap of sexual immorality. This time the text hints that he is moving beyond the adulterous to the brothel or house of prostitution.
It was located by the high places of the city near the busy intersections. The text indicates the advertising was both visual and verbal. The woman of folly was marketing sex for hire.
Her target was a wide range of men from the business man to the young man. The common denominator was that her victims were all naive thinking there would be no consequences. After all, they convinced themselves this was not an affair or adultery. It was sex for hire.
Sex for hire is the worst kind of depravity. It feeds human trafficking. It destroys the sanctity of marriage. It turns sex into a commodity. It has a wide range of victims that even includes enslaved children.
The text ends by saying “the dead are there.” Sex for hire kills on both sides of the equation.
It kills self respect and dignity. Sex slaves die an inward death with each new client. For them, it is a living hell that never ends. Hopes and dreams of a family and happy future are shattered.
For the man or woman who resorts to sex for hire, they commit an inward suicide as well. They kill the true meaning of romance, intimacy, fidelity and family legacy. They are not powerful, they are pathetic slaves to their own passions.
Soon their conscience becomes calloused. They fall into the bottomless pit that Paul describes in Ephesians 4:17-19. They end up “giving themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.”
There are many entry points to this spiral. It often begin with pornography or fantasy novels. They both qualify as “sex for hire.” Its end is a deceived and deprived mind. Sexual immorality is a demonic whirlpool that sucks in and destroys many.
Jesus Christ and the gospel are the only hope for those caught in the sexual immorality spiral. He can forgive and free people caught on both sides of Proverbs 9:13-18. He can help the victims and the villains. The journey to forgiveness, freedom and self dignity can be long and hard, but it is glorious.
