The Folly of Scoffing God: Proverbs 9:12
“12) If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you alone will bear it.” Proverbs 9:12
Solomon now warns about a condition that happens to many people. They are wise in their own eyes. They think they already know everything. They scoff at God, other people and the simple gospel message.
Such was the case with the Greek philosophers and debaters Paul often encountered in his travels. He wrote about them in 1 Corinthians 1:18-31. Take a moment and read those verses.
The list of those who are worldly wise to the point of becoming heavenly foolish encompasses many. Among them are atheists, agnostics, philosophers, scientists, phycologists and liberal theologians. Many have earned degrees, published in journals, teach in universities and yet they scoff at the notion of God.
But the list also includes popular sports figures, famous actors, culture queens, corrupt politicians, drug lords and gang leaders. It includes anyone who lives as if God does not exist.
I beg you to stop and consider the case for Jesus Christ. Do not scoff or scorn Him. When this life is over, there will be a test! There will be accountability. Every mouth will be closed and all scoffing will end.
