Two Radically Different Responses to Correction: Proverbs 9:7-9
“7) He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. 8) Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. 9) Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning.” Proverbs 9:7-9
The wicked man and the scoffer cannot handle correction or reproof. The root problem is that they are wise and right in their own eyes. They refuse to listen. Their pride is self blinding.
By contrast, the wise man and the righteous man are always eager to listen, learn and receive instruction. They value the counsel of others. They welcome correction and reproof.
This contrast is especially true when it comes to the way they view the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says; “16) All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17) so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
The Bible is the text book of the wise. They are eager to learn and grow. They want to be equipped and grounded in every area of life. That’s why Paul pointed Timothy to build his life on the inspired Scriptures.
By contrast, scoffers mock and ignore Gods Word. They see no value in it because they think they already know everything. But there is a catch!
Life has a way of testing people. As Jesus said in Matthew 7:24-27, the storms of life are going to come. They will test your roof, walls and foundation. Some houses will come crashing down, others will stand firm.
