Governing With Wisdom: Proverbs 8:14-16
“14) Counsel is mine and sound wisdom; I am understanding, power is mine. 15) By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice. 16) By me princes rule, and nobles, All who judge rightly.” Proverbs 8:14-16
As Solomon continues to expound the virtues of wisdom, he ventures into a few interesting subjects. The first is counsel.
Solomon was the wisest of all men, yet he surrounded himself with wise counselors. He wanted to expand his perspective. This helped him reign wisely.
This moves into the next subject related to the realm of politics. Many cannot handle power. It corrupts them. They are tempted to use their power to exploit people or promote themselves. History is full of tragic examples.
Nothing takes more wisdom than being a faithful public servant. Nearly every decision has ramifications and possible unintended consequences. Many times pitfalls are unforeseen. Knee jerk legislation is seldom good.
Governing in our modern complex world is even more challenging. No wonder the Bible exhorts believers to pray and intercede for kings and all who are in authority. (1 Timothy 2:1-10)
Pray for civil leaders to have wise and discerning hearts tempered by a reverence for God. It is good for leaders not to lean on their own understanding. The conscious awareness that God will hold them accountable is a good thing.
