A Brief Look at Parenting: Proverbs 6:20-23
“20) My son, observe the commandment of your father And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; 21) Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck. 22) When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you. 23) For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life” Proverbs 6:20-23
Parents have a crucial role in the life of their children. In Hebrew culture, the mother was the primary teacher through age twelve. She taught reading, imparted scripture study, and a wide range of basic life skills. 2 Timothy 1:5 and 3:14-15 are great examples of the mother’s parenting role.
Then the father stepped into a more formal role with character, business and leadership skills. There was a formal ceremony around age twelve when sons became legal heirs of the estate. The father gave significant nurture, encouragement and guidance to his sons all the way from birth to manhood.
Some believe the book of Proverbs became the primary curriculum for instruction used by both the mother and the father. It was to be memorized by age twelve.
The effectiveness of this duel parenting approach became the basis of Pauls philosophy of ministry as recorded in 1 Timothy 2:7-12. It is worthy of deep study by every parent, pastor and church.
In this context, Solomon was exhorting his sons to honor, value and obey the instruction of both their father and the mother. It was a well established pathway for gaining wisdom, well rounded life skills, good character, emotional health and success in life. This explains why orthodox Jewish culture has been preserved and thrived through the centuries.
Satan is out to destroy nations. He does this by targeting families. When this biblical model of duel parenting is destroyed, children grow up damaged and ill prepared for life.
Satan works hard to distract, distort and twist both mothers and fathers so they fail physically, emotionally and spiritually at this role. Good parenting skills are not being taught or embraced in modern society.
In many countries the state has taken over. For the most part, the state is intensionally imparting anti-Christian values.
There is a huge need for teaching godly parenting skills in our churches today. Many parents grew up in dysfunctional homes themselves and carry deep hurts and emotional baggage. Turning this around is going to be a multi-generational process.
Start by focusing on your own personal healing, growth and development. Then work on becoming the best possible parent for each of your children no matter your current status or situation in life. Seek Gods love, grace and help!
