Seven Abominations: Proverbs 6:16-19
“16) There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17) Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18) A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, 19) A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.” Proverbs 6:16-19
These are intriguing verses. In Romans 6:19 Paul talked about the importance of not presenting the members of your body as instruments of sin but rather to God as instruments of righteousness.
In these verses , Solomon talks about the eyes, the tongue, the hands, the heart and feet. Every member of your body can be employed in doing evil.
The opposite is also true. Every member of your body can be dedicated to God for great good and to serve Him. This theme is seen often in the Bible. (Romans 12:1-2)
Of these body members, the tongue is the most powerful. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” In Matthew 15:15-20, Jesus said what comes out of the mouth defiles the person. In Ephesians 4:29 Paul, “Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth.” James 3 is dedicated to the deadly power of the tongue.
Notice that three of the abominations Solomon mentioned are tied to the tongue. If you want the circumstances of your life to change, dedicate every member of your body to God, especially your tongue. What comes out of your mouth directs your whole body and sets unseen forces in motion.
